MetaTune Privacy Policy

Effective date: May 31, 2026

MetaTune is a native macOS music tag editor made by espirito LLC ("we," "us," or "our"). This Privacy Policy explains, in plain language, what MetaTune does and does not do with your information.

The short version: MetaTune does not collect your personal data. There are no accounts, no sign-in, no tracking, no ads, and no analytics. Your music files and your edits stay on your Mac. The only time anything leaves your device is when you personally trigger an optional metadata lookup, and even then we attach no identifier that ties the request to you.

What we collect

No personal data. We do not collect, store, sell, or share any personal data about you. MetaTune has no user account and no sign-in, so there is nothing to register and nothing for us to hold.

We do not operate any server that receives your data. We have no database of users. We cannot see your music library, your file names, your tags, or how you use the app.

Local processing

Everything you do in MetaTune happens locally on your Mac:

None of this requires a network connection, and nothing is written to your files until you choose Apply. Until then, all edits live only as a pending, undoable session. MetaTune supports atomic writes and an optional .bak backup so the originals can be preserved, plus full Undo/Redo of the pending session before you Apply.

Optional third-party lookups

MetaTune can look up metadata online to help you tag your music, but only when you trigger a lookup yourself. These requests go directly from your Mac to the third party over HTTPS. They carry only the search terms or audio fingerprint needed to return a result. Because MetaTune has no account, no user identifier is attached to any request.

The four services are:

Each of these services is operated by a third party and has its own privacy policy, which governs how that service handles the request once it leaves your Mac. We encourage you to review them. If you never trigger a lookup, MetaTune makes no network requests for metadata.

How your AcoustID key is handled

The AcoustID API key is bring-your-own. You can obtain a free personal key from acoustid.org, and you only need one if you want to use AcoustID fingerprint lookups or the acoustic duplicate finder.

Your key is:

We never see your key, and it never reaches any espirito server because we do not operate one.

Apple Music and Apple Events

MetaTune can optionally read and write tags in the Apple Music app using macOS automation (Apple Events), keyed by each track's persistent ID. This activity stays on your Mac.

To protect your library, MetaTune deliberately leaves catalog, subscription, and cloud tracks read-only and only edits tracks you own or imported. Locked tracks are shown but cannot be modified.

If your edits to the Music app appear on your other devices, that is because you have iCloud Music Library enabled — that synchronization is performed by Apple, not by MetaTune. MetaTune does not perform any cloud sync of its own.

No tracking, ads, or analytics

MetaTune contains:

We do not profile you, and we do not measure how you use the app.

Data sharing and selling

We do not sell your data, and we do not share it. This is simple to promise because we do not collect any personal data in the first place. The only outbound information is the optional metadata lookups described above, which you initiate and which go directly to the chosen third party with no identifier attached.

Purchases (the one-time "MetaTune Unlock" in-app purchase) and any billing, restore, or refund are handled entirely by Apple through the App Store under Apple's own privacy practices. MetaTune has no account system and does not receive your payment information.

Children

MetaTune is a general-audience tool for editing music files. It does not knowingly collect any personal data from anyone, including children, because it does not collect personal data at all. There is no sign-up, no profile, and no account.

Security

MetaTune is distributed through the Mac App Store and runs inside Apple's protections:

Your AcoustID key is protected by the macOS Keychain. Because your data stays on your device, the security of your Mac (your account password, disk encryption such as FileVault, and macOS updates) is the primary safeguard for your music and your edits.

International users

MetaTune is available worldwide and is localized in 10 languages.

Because we do not collect any personal data, there is nothing on our side to access, correct, export, or delete — we simply do not hold information about you. Regardless of where you live, no personal data about you is transferred to us or stored by us.

The data on your device — your music files, your tags, and your edits — belongs to you and stays under your control. The optional metadata lookups you trigger are sent directly to the third-party services listed above and are governed by their respective privacy policies.

Changes to this Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time, for example to reflect new features or legal requirements. When we make a material change, we will update the effective date at the top and post the revised version at https://espirito.jp/product/metatune/privacy/. We encourage you to review it periodically. Your continued use of MetaTune after an update means you accept the revised Policy.
